STILL SOME RED IN THE TREES IN DECEMBER
greggcestaro.com A little fun in the sun last week before Christmas in Austin. ModelMayhem Mod Nicole wanted a 70’s styled shoot with her clothes and overall look. Laguna Gloria is a place I love to shoot at with it’s little dock, Florida styled foliage and lake-side locales. Really good December sun, warm, bright, and low on the horizon even at 2pm, really backlight the fall foliage and dress and with her reed wrapped hair made for a real Native American look. Though I had my portable studio I opted for available light for a more dreamy, less fill flash look.
Same with the dock shot. I really wanted to create a more nostalgic look and the well-lit studio thing made for something less 70’s than desired. I really relied then on the washed out effect from the low backlit sun with a bump up on exposure. I like the way this has a nice old vacation snap shot feel to it. The fashion is cool too with the boots and jean cut-off shorts and vintage shirt. The addition of a cane pole makes the overall feel fun and fits well altogether. For me, this shoot was less technical than my normal shooting, which I know I need to do more of or at least reincorporate it in as a style option to my normal program.
That said, break out the point and shoot and trek through the jungle. The motif, LOST. A small path through the thick palmettos near the lake set the stage as we walked back and forth, her looking for a way out, undressing from the cable knit vest in what appear to be a steamy jungle. Camera set on constant shooting and lit with my top secret light gave this a cinemagraphic feel, reminding me of my archaeological trips to Central America back in the day. For me, a fun couple of hours just having fun with Nicole and forgetting about F-stops, and apertures, etc.
